I was up before the dawn, of course, to finish orientation at work; on my way home I bought flowers, a card, and pink frosting, because I had a plan.
...get your mind out of the gutter. The frosting was for baked goods. Mrs. Fungus had requested a batch of Aunt Charlotte's Saucepan Brownies (official Fungus designation for the brownies I make) and I was going to deliver, only not quite in the way she had expected. The idea came to me almost as soon as she'd made the request--before, actually, because I had thought to bake a cake to have after dinner on Saturday and she said, "I want brownies!" But my plan required frosting (and I needed the other things) so I went to the store on my way home from work.
I hit the hay for several hours first, after seeing her off. When I got up, off to the races!
Instead of putting the brownie batter into a 13x9 pan, as specified by the instructions, I poured half into a 9x9 pan and the rest into a 9" circular pan. Baked them, and once they'd cooled I...uh...hey, I don't have a plate big enough for this...do I have a platter? Oh!
I cut some cardboard from a box, covered it with aluminum foil, and put the square part on the improvised platter, one point facing towards me. I cut the circular part in half and placed the semicircles atop the diamond, thus making a perfect heart shape. Then I frosted it with the pink frosting.
When she got home from work, Mrs. Fungus was delighted: "It even matches my flowers!"
And the brownies are, of course, delicious.
