#4122: Roast chicken

Mrs. Fungus expressed a desire for roast chicken, and went to the trouble of buying what was needed to make it (including the chicken) and yesterday was Der Tag.

I looked up a few recipes online, but didn't feel like getting overly fancy with it, so instead of using a rub or all kinds of herbs or beds of vegetables I just patted the bird dry, oiled it, dusted it with the usual spices, put it in a roasting pan, and roasted it.

("The usual spices" are salt, pepper, and garlic powder--though this time I added rosemary because Mom always put rosemary on roast chicken.)

Heated the oven to 450, then reduced to 425 when I put the bird in. It took about two hours (it was a large chicken) for the popper to go off, but when it came out the skin was crispy and brown and the meat was tender and juicy and flavorful.

Mashed potatos (from a box), gravy (made from scratch), canned corn and crescent rolls--quite a meal.

Now, the instructions on the wrapper said to roast the bird at 350; I'd wager that would have led to meat that was more dry and less palatable, though I can't say exactly why I feel that way. Mom would probably be horrified that I was cooking poultry at such high temperatures, but it works.

In any case, my breakfast today is going to be an open-faced chicken sandwich with gravy on it. Oh yeah.

Weer'd has a post up about a new unsettling side effect of global warming: frost quakes!

I was home sick from grammar school one winter day (I think it was when I had chicken pox) and suddenly bam thud something made this banging noise that startled me and my mother. A day or so later there was a story in the paper headlined "mysterious booms shake up midwest". I wonder if that was this phenomenon?

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Or, another entry in the "Karma hits you in the face like a 18-pound sledge!" archive.

Short form: terrorist trying to teach other people to be terrorists inadvertently blows himself up, along with most of the class he was teaching. Thanks for saving us the trouble, asshat. Pity you can't do that again....

Obamacare stiffs the people who most need it. Only a Democrat could make a program meant to help the needy do exactly the opposite.

I've got some errands to run today. How much fun etc.

One of them ought to be heading over to Pep Boys to take that belt back, but we'll see how I do.

The snow has compacted a bit, so it's no longer threatening to cover the sundial. It hasn't been above freezing for quite a while but the sun is shining, and that tends to compact snow even in arctic conditions. The weather forecast originally said we'd get above freezing later this week, but now it says "no", and we're likely to get more snow to boot. Whee!

The other day I was playing WoW and listening to the OST for Hime-chan's Ribbon, and realized something important.

When I'm running a mage (like Ormus) and need to bump my DPS, I cast "mirror image" which pops up three clones of the mage which proceed to cast "frost bolt" over and over and over again for about thirty seconds. These three clones also draw aggro and make it harder for monsters to kill me.

The other night I was listening to the OST for H-cR and realized, "'Mirror image' really needs a macro." Specifically, it needed to use Hime-chan's incantation for creating a clone of herself, "Tinka tinku tinkuru tinkuru." (I'm omitting the "futari ni naare" part because it makes a total of four mages, and the Japanese gets a bit too cumbersome. Besides, the first four words are the cool part.)

So now when I cast "mirror image", first Ormus says, "Tinka tinku tinkuru tinkuru."

Yes, I am a nerd.
