Europe doesn't want to pay for its own defense.

NATO existed to defend against the USSR, which has been defunct for more than 20 years. The Russian Federation is not expansionist the way the USSR was. Further, the US does not have the money to continue to pay for the defense of Europe.

As Borepatch opines, if Europe doesn't want to pay for their own self-defense, why should the US?
