#6044: The coldest night of the year

I don't think it's been colder than this. Official temperature in the Fungal Vale is 5°, but the nifty IR thermometer Mrs. Fungus gave me for Christmas says -3.4°.

Regardless, cold. 'Taint fit for man nor beast. Why, I wouldn't even send a Democrat out on a night like this.

Okay, maybe a Democrat. Depending on who it was.

What a marvelous Christmas it was, though.

Sunday, Christmas Eve, we braved the snow to go to my mother-in-law's house, where we had beef sandwiches and spent a joyous evening together. I made pasta salad and spinach dip, which complemented the sandwiches well, and there were two kinds of cake for dessert. And we watched Miracle on 34th Street (the original one).

The drive out there was treacherous, and slow, because although the snow was not falling very fast the various agencies charged with keeping the roads clear were not doing much in that respect. We got there about 15 minutes late, which wasn't too bad. The drive back was better, mostly because it had stopped snowing by then, but we got about 2.5 inches of global warming on Christmas Eve! and it made for a lovely White Christmas.

Mrs. Fungus and I stayed in on Christmas. I cooked a turkey dinner (turkey breast section, not a whole one) and it came out delicious even though I had neither aromatics nor cheesecloth to contain them.

About 3 PM or so I built a fire in the fireplace, and I kept feeding it logs all day; it got hot enough that the heat exchanger was giving off that "hot dust" smell that ductwork does the first time you turn the heat on in the autumn. I kept that fire going for nine hours.

When I got home from work tonight I brought in more wood. I expect to build a fire tonight or tomorrow. If I keep doing this, I'll need to cut down that birch tree next summer just so I'll have wood for the winter!

I LIKE THIS. The only thing that kept me from going out and setting off fireworks when I heard it was that it was Christmas and I don't do politics on Christmas. I just don't.

I'm linking this AoSHQ omnibus solely to answer the question posed in the picture at the top of it: "Dreamers will be deported. What will you do?"

My answer? "Stand up and cheer."

You know, I'm not sure what kind of point you're trying to make here but stealing the baby Jesus from a nativity scene while exposing your breasts seems rather pointless to me.

Apparently the would-be thief is not trying out Kekko Kamen cosplay but is in fact a member of a group named...oh dear..."FEMEN", which says its goal is "complete victory over patriarchy."

Stealing the baby Jesus from a creche is the ultimate way to defeat the patriarchy, of course.

I don't understand why we give money to Palestine anyway. They're terrorists, for fuck's sake. This is AWESOME NEWS on the level of cutting our spending on funding the useless f-ing UN.

I wonder what it tastes like. Now I'll have to try baking one. *sigh*

So, in the same box as the IR thermometer, there was a probe-type cooking thermometer. It allowed me to check the turkey's internal temperature almost instantly.

Besides that, she gave me another train set and some accessories. So I now have two N scale train sets. I guess I'd better start building a layout, eh?
