Since 1917, whenever a country has tried to turn itself into a Marxist utopia, it's only a matter of time before a whole lot of people are starving, imprisoned or shot.

So! Extremely slow day at work today, so I did a little research into the Jeep's wobble.
After rotating the tires this past Wednesday, the wobble has changed. Or, rather, the shimmy has--because several times now I've been scooting along at 70 MPH without any noticeable vibration at all.
Prior to this, as I accelerated, it would start to shake--and shake bad--around 51, 52 MPH; the amplitude would taper off as the speed went above 60, but it would never completely go away. Now, it's more likely than not to smooth out above 65, and stay smooth to about 77. at which point it comes back.
And this led me to think: What if I have two DIFFERENT vibrations?
Okay? One that peaks around 54 MPH which is a resonant vibration, and the other which is a perfectly ordinary "not quite balanced" wheel shimmy?
I've been approaching this from the standpoint of a single cause: this is out of alignment, that is bad, blah blah blah, etcetera, something had to be found that was making all this happen. But if they're two different vibrations, they can have two different causes, and then it becomes quite simple.
The high-speed shimmy, the annoying but otherwise harmless vibration, that's just tires. These are about worn out, so I'll be replacing them later this year anyway.
The serious shaking, then--
Recalling that I did something to the Jeep and then there was the shimmy, I looked at the service log and checked Fungus posts corresponding to those dates--and wouldn't you know it, here is when I replaced the front rotors and immediately afterwards had the shimmy? I assumed it was tires, because I had rotated them at the same time I did the front brakes--but it's obviously not the tires, not after some 3 or 4 rotations and a new set of rubber!
It is just possible that one or both of those cheap Chinese rotors was out-of-balance, and when I hit the right speed--the speed at which a Jeep's front end wants to vibrate anyway!--off it goes.
I say "the speed at which a Jeep's front end wants to vibrate" becuase the phenomenon known as "death wobble", in nearly all cases, comes on somewhere north of 50 MPH. Regardless of cause.
The remedy, of course, is to go get new rotors and put them on. That will cost about $80, which is money I haven't got right now, so testing my theory is going to have to wait. (Sure, it's only $40 if I buy a pair from the shop that sold me the ones on there now. And maybe they're okay and maybe they're junk....)
This fits, and it fits pretty well. The one thing that was holding back a proper diagnosis was that rotating the tires never seemed to effect the vibrations--but now it has, and hopefully that's the clue I needed. Because no matter what I do I cannot find any other possible cause for this nonsense.
We'll see how we do...but not this week, worse luck.
