#7502: For the record

Taken from a comment from a prior post:
As for "third parties" you can kiss the gop goodbye. They rendered themselves irrelevant on the sixth of January; like a nuclear bomb detonating, all the action happens in the first thirty nanoseconds, and after that it's just the redistribution of energy. Come the next election, gop is going to find that it lost some large percentage of seventy-four million votes, and those people will not go back to them no matter how much they plead.

Their job was to oppose the democrats, and they revealed that when push comes to shove they won't. If nothing else good comes out of all this, at least we know now just how useless the republican party is.
I suppose I should be careful, bandying around talk like that. I might get labeled a "libertarian" and I sure as hell don't want that.

I'm not a libertarian, anyway. I only voted libertarian once in my life, and that was because I did not care to vote for Mitt Romney; I didn't even know who the libertarian candidate was, not then, and not in the most recent election.

The only reason we have the republican party now stems from how useless the Whig party was, which was the last party that opposed the democrat party; only sometime in the middle of the 19th century their policies relegated them to irrelevance. But I don't see a third party getting any real traction so long as the government can define their activities as "domestic terrorism" according to its whims.

I am extraordinarily pessimistic when it comes to the idea of government being self-limiting. That pessimism is not alleviated by the talk coming out of DC over the past couple of weeks.

The only prediction I can make now is that the left will overreach, and bite off more than it can chew, or spit out. The question is, "how soon?" Will it be soon enough that the American people can do anything about it?

And so we'll just have to hunker down and go with the flow, I guess.
