#135: Adventures in Escort Repair 4

Got the front brakes put together today. They went together without a hitch, and seem to work just fine. And they look PRETTY, too. It won't last, but for the moment, they look really nice.

If I had been thinking, I could have painted the caliper bridges yesterday and let them dry overnight. A coat of Rustoleum would have kept them a little cleaner. Oh well.

I didn't get much else done, though. I installed the other air cleaner clips from the green car, so the air cleaner is now properly held together with four clips. I cleaned up under the hatch in back--put the stowaway spare away, put the tires on, etc.

I discovered, to my dismay, that the power steering pump is leaking like a seive. I'm not sure where it's coming from, but it's not coming from the pump shaft or the hoses. This means I'll have to pull the alternator, in order to get at the pump; remove the known good one from the green car, and install it in Red.

I found an empty bottle of STP power steering fluid treatment and stop-leak under the driver's seat. So, no joy there. Well, the Escort uses ATF in the power steering, anyway. (Yeah. That surprised the hell out of me, too, but it's in the owner's manual. It also uses ATF in the MANUAL transmission. Go figure. Must be useful stuff.)

Car work ended when my brother arrived from Arlington Heights. He took us up there in his Acura TL to see his son play baseball. Then he drove us back here. Well, it was a nice change of pace, anyway.
