#1374: Hidden costs

Chinese manufacturing is beginning to seem like less of a good deal these days.

Well, you've got a consistent problem with melamine-tainted foodstuffs. Lead paint. Toys that double as date-rape drugs. Etcetera. For two years there has been story after story about this or that problem with stuff that's made in China.

...and finally US manufacturers are twigging to the fact that it's not cheaper if you have to recall it and replace it with something else. And that the Chinese government doesn't care about this stuff: "It's your fault we did this, not ours. You should hold us to a higher standard!"

How ironic it is, that the largest communist economy in the world acts like a bunch of yankee traders.

The solution is to move manufacturing back to places that give a rat's ass, or at least to places where the corporations have more control over what they're buying. This means that things will cost more, but there's little that can be done about that; and at least there won't be any hidden costs, such as recalls, for corporations to deal with.

So the pool stopped leaking on its own--at least, the leak slowed significantly, and it wasn't much to begin with. I guess it's in a place where,…
