#178: Sophistication and Nuance

...guess I might as well jump on the bandwagon.

John Kerry made a "joke" yesterday:

You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq.

And he says he's not going to apologize.

Here we see the "sophistication and nuance" which is Kerry's hallmark. If we would only "make an effort to be smart" we could understand why he shouldn't be taken to task for his comments. It's not fair of us to hold him accountable for the utterly moronic words which he emits. He characterized as "despicable" the "Republican attacks" against "those who did [serve in the military]".

I need not discuss Kerry's questionable military service record here; the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth did enough during 2004 to raise a "reasonable doubt" about Kerry's version of his service record. Besides, the US military saw fit to give him medals for his service--medals which Kerry threw over the White House fence, but didn't throw, instead throwing the medals of someone else...?

To be honest I can actually see how Kerry's remarks could have been a lame attempt at humor. It certainly fits the profile for the kind of alleged humor you normally see from liberals--mean-spirited and derogatory--but that's no excuse. I would think that someone as "sophisticated and nuanced" as John Kerry would be able to make a joke which was significantly more coherent than that. After all, how long has he been a Senator? Doesn't a person eventually learn something about public speaking?

Consider, if you will, the number of misstatements made by Republicans, and how each and every one of them is paraded around--time and time again--as an example of how stupid Republicans are. Dan Quayle's misstatements have practically been covered in gold and encrusted in gems as reliquaries of the Left, hauled out at special occasions for the admiration of the party faithful. The verbal blunders of Republicans--no matter how old--are always sources of hilarity for liberals.

This is how it works: Liberals need not debate the issues, because the people who advocate the conservative sides of those issues are stupid. How do we know they're stupid? Well, listen to Dan Quayle! Listen to George Bush! They make mistakes when they talk!

During a discussion I had with a liberal, he actually cited that as a reason George Bush was unqualified to be President: he made mistakes, verbal and otherwise.

So here we have a situation where John Kerry, who was lauded during the 2004 elections for his intelligence, his "sophistication and nuance", made a mistake while speaking, and made comments which were construed as insulting to people serving in our armed forces. But he's not going to apologize for it, because it's all George Bush's fault, anyway! He's not even going to apologize to our troops for it. John Kerry is tired of these despicable attacks!

I am really glad he's not President.
