#2808: Maybe I should move to Australia.

"Speak English and turn up sober" goes one bit of slug text. Heck, I can manage that.

Then again, taking a job 100 miles away landed me in the looney bin. Maybe I need to rethink this.

Reporters are not allowed to yell questions at Obama. Can you imagine what the reaction would have been if George Bush had done this?

Alan Caruba joins me in evaluating Obama as Jimmy Carter 2.0.

I may have to give AMD a try. Eight cores running at 4 GHz? For $320?

...that's giving Intel a run for its money, isn't it? The i7 has six cores and runs at a lower frequency. But the AMD processors mentioned in Pixy's post aren't released yet.

Well, it's not like I'm upgrading anytime soon.

Mark Steyn talks about muslim school prayer in Canada.

Here's how "progressives" view prayer in school:

Muslim prayer: "What an awesome display of diversity."

...Steyn's piece is full of his usual snark; it's excellent.

Well: the modem UPS did not emit a single beep last night. I think the overvolt problem has solved itself as more houses get reconnected to the power grid (as commentor Dracphelan suggested). My desktop UPS reports a line voltage of 126V, which is 5% over nominal, and the lowest it's been in three days.

I woke up at 6 AM (after going to bed around 3:00 and getting to sleep after 4:30) so I'm going back to bed.

This is such a pain in the ass. I set my alarm for 1 PM, thinking, "Okay, that'd be ten hours of sleep...assuming I can get to sleep in a reasonable time frame." The worst part is, I was tired when I went to bed and still I couldn't get to sleep. WTF.

It is as if I cannot sleep when it's dark outside. No, I haven't figured out why.

I had a gander at the helmet before bed; the paint remained clouded. It was too cold when I was painting the helmet. Argh etc--but as I said, it's just a matter of waiting a couple days and putting on another coat or two of gloss black. This time I'll be more careful about the temperature when I paint.

You know, I have never had this happen with spray paint before. Then again, I'm used to it being above 65° all the time in July, too.

I was kind of worried that the outdoor cat had gotten killed. I saw him last week, the night before I went grocery shopping; I bought two four-packs of the cheaper canned cat food specifically to feed him with--and then I didn't see him for days.

He's been hanging around for several weeks. It looks to me like something got him in one eye, and he seems a bit on the clumsy side, which makes me think he's not seeing too well out of the other eye. He seems spry enough, though unhurried; I haven't seen him run. Then again he's kind-of used to me, and has gotten to the point of coming over to the food dish before I go inside. Or maybe he's just that hungry--I don't know.

But as he's a feral cat, there is absolutely nothing I can do for him to improve his situation, other than feeding him; he won't let anyone near enough to him to grab him, and I don't want animal control out here setting traps. In his condition it'd be a one-way trip to the vet for him.

One year, with winter coming, Mom called AC to get this cat's mother. Mom was worried that it was going to freeze to death in the cold, etc, etc. AC set out a live trap baited with cat food.

They caught a possum. It was relocated and they never tried setting another trap, which is just as well--that cat and her progeny did a bang-up job of keeping the rodentia around here in check.

I've started dubbing all the Haruhi anime to DVD in chronological order. I did the first five eps Tuesday night, and sat down to do disk 2 last night.

Right in the middle of the second ep on that disk ("Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya") my e-mail program dutifully checked for, and downloaded, a single e-mail from my ISP's servers, and then cheerfully announced, "E-mail!" in Homestar Runner's voice.

I took the DVD out and threw it in the trash can.

Moral of the story: when you're dubbing anything, make sure you've eliminated extraneous noises.
