Why do there need to be three? Let's face it: The Hobbit is essentially a stand-alone story. While it contains the setup for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you don't need to read LoTR in order to get The Hobbit. The reverse is also true; if you don't read The Hobbit before reading LoTR you're none the worse for wear.
Yet it sounds to me as if they're piling Silmarillion into The Hobbit and making a huge f-ing trilogy out of it, and it's just so unnecessary.
The more I hear about this shit, the more I'm thinking I'll just buy the DVDs when they come out. Shit.
